Why Lean Six Sigma exists

Learning outcome: Explain how Lean, Six Sigma and customer value work together.

01

Lean removes work that consumes effort without creating customer value.

02

Six Sigma reduces defects and unwanted variation in a process.

03

A good improvement protects the customer, the people doing the work and the business result.

APPLY IT

Find the customer need

Choose one process you know. Write who receives its output, what they need and how you know whether the need was met.

  • Range is 1-19 days
  • 34% of enquiries arrive without a complete specification
  • Urgent jobs bypass technical review

Which measure would best support the first investigation?

CONSTRUCTION

NCR closure delays

A contractor has many corrective actions open beyond the target date. Management proposes sending more reminders.

  • 43 actions are overdue
  • 52% have no named action owner
  • Most delays occur before cause review
  • Reminder emails are already sent weekly

What should the team address first?

AFTER WHITE BELT

Turn awareness into evidence.

Choose one small process, apply the workbook with the people who do the work and record what you observed. Improvement competence grows through responsible application—not a badge alone.
